In the distant past of November 2015, Nayutan Alien released their debut record. A catchy rock effort with a lot of electronic-style influences. This album is like is like a Pengolin. It’s got scales and it’s a great pleasure to consume, and it’s a shame lots of people don’t even know this exists. You can read more about it in this review.
Album Information
This album was released on the fourteenth of November 2015, and it features eight tracks. All vocals are done by Hatsune Miku. This is Nayutan Alien’s debut album, and his only work so far, so it is not possible for me to compare it alongside his other records.
Intro
When you fire up this album, the first thing that’ll reach your ears is the intro riff to Andromeda Andromeda. This song sets the pace for the rest of the album and is a basic summary of what the entire record is like. It’s got catchy hooks, interesting melodies and a mid-paced tempo that’ll keep your head bobbing form start to finish. This is basically how every song goes, it’s got a riff, verse, hook, and so forth. Nothing revolutionary, but that’s not what you would expect from a record like this either.
Note choices
One thing that I noticed when listening to this album were its interesting note choices, they really give a nice, distinct flavor to the thing. For example on the song Hikou Shoujo, during the verses it almost sounds like she’s singing out-of-tune. That’s a good thing though, it really grabs your attention and keeps you immersed. Some of the chord progressions are really nice too, there is a definite jazz influence on this album. It’s barely noticeable because it’s covered in thick layers of pop rock, though. The production on this album is quite standard, it’s a basic rock mix filled with many layers of guitars and effects.
Flaw
The greatest flaw of this record is probably the monotony, the songs are all in about the same tempo, in the same structure, with the same voicebank. Now this isn’t that big of a problem if you listen to these songs separately. But when you listen to the album as a whole, it really becomes an annoyance. I dare you to listen to Andromeda Andromeda, and How to Warp in direct succession. These songs are nearly identical and it’s just a thorn in the eye for me. I really wish they’d have left one of these out, doesn’t really matter which one.
In Closing
All in all this record, makes for a good, easy listen. The tracks are groovy, and they’re great for listening to when you’re on the move or with friends. Some of these tracks are great to sing along to as well, that is, if you take the time to actually get to know the lyrics. As much as it lacks variety, it makes up for it by, well, being just plain fun to listen to. Definitely not a bad debut album.
